Too Fast, Too Loose

[2:40 PM] Bob: …all righty then…why…in old type set…ie….The Pennfylvania Gazette…why the f for the s…Thurfday….etc….were they short type of the correct letters…or is this some type of arcane style ….

[2:41 PM] Bob: …reference …thursday, September 25, 1729 of the afore mentioned paper…

[2:50 PM] Me: Check again. It’s not an f. It’s a long s. [See above photo, from the Bill of Rights.] You will be able to tell difference between a real lowcase f. Long s is medieval. Scribes liked elegance.

[2:54 PM] Me: Sometimes, printers used an f for a long s, in a pinch. Sometimes they just screwed up. You’ll notice, too, that they play fast and loose with spelling, syntax.

[2:55 PM] Bob: …me too…

[2:56 PM] Me: Oof. You said a mouthful.
